From Pain to Purpose: The Story Behind Dead the Silence

Every movement has a beginning, and for Dead the Silence, it started with unimaginable pain. In 2012, Anthony Duncan faced one of the most devastating moments of his life—the loss of his younger sister, Ashley Duncan, to suicide. Ashley’s passing left a void not only in Anthony’s heart but in the hearts of everyone who knew her. The grief, confusion, and emotional turmoil that followed could have consumed him. But instead of allowing that pain to destroy him, Anthony transformed it into purpose.

Dead the Silence was born from Anthony’s personal journey through grief, depression, and eventual healing. Speaking openly about his loss became a source of strength. The more he talked about Ashley and his struggles, the more he noticed a powerful ripple effect—others began opening up too. Conversations that were once taboo started to flow. People who had kept their struggles hidden for years began to find their voice.

Shortly after, Anthony reconnected with childhood friend Osadeba Omokaro, who had also been deeply affected by Ashley’s passing. Osadeba had suffered in silence for years, grappling with depression and unresolved emotions tied to her death. Their shared grief became a bridge that brought them closer, and through their honest conversations, they both began to heal. It was in these raw and real moments that they realized they had the potential to help others.

Dead the Silence was created not just as a tribute to Ashley, but as a lifeline to those silently struggling. Anthony and Osadeba saw a need for a space where people could talk openly about mental health without judgment or fear. Their mission was clear: to end the silence that so often surrounds mental illness and to empower individuals to speak their truth.

Through workshops, events, and storytelling, Dead the Silence brings people together to share, listen, and grow. The initiative creates opportunities for community members to express their pain, find solidarity, and discover hope. It is a space where vulnerability is honored, and healing is encouraged.

From pain came purpose. From loss came a legacy. And from silence came a voice that now speaks on behalf of so many. Dead the Silence is more than an organization—it’s a movement. A call to action. A reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is potential for light.

Anthony and Osadeba continue to lead by example, using their personal journeys to inspire change. Their story is a testament to the fact that out of great pain can come powerful purpose—and that no one has to suffer in silence.
